SAYING GOODBYE TO TULIPS

If you follow us on Instagram, you might have seen that our tulips got demolished by deer this year. A sad discovery, but we weren't altogether surprised… Deer LOVE tulips. The silver lining is that it finalizes a decision we were toying with but couldn't quite commit to.

Call us crazy, but moving forward we will not be selling tulip bulbs. We really want to focus on truly local flowers. Every year, growers import tulip bulbs from the Netherlands - it's expensive and we have very little control over the quality & quantity. They also arrive, both as bulbs and blooms, at two very busy times of year for the farm. Plus, over the past four years Spring has come with the most extreme heat waves (temperatures over 30 degrees) which causes tulips to bloom so quickly that many end up going to waste. If that wasn’t quite enough, the final reason is they are very labour intensive. Every year Dawson has to either hand dig 6 inch deep trenches (for 20,000 bulbs thats no small feat), or we have been building raised beds- but that is tedious and costly and then bulbs are carefully placed by hand before covering them up. So, we are saying Goodbye to these beauties for now and we hope you understand.
